Theme
Play’n GO has chosen a pantheon theme for this slot. However, a single culture simply was not enough, so the developer decided to bring four different divine beings into the mix, thus creating a battle of the gods. The four celestials in Divine Showdown are Thor, the Norse god of lightning; Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom; Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead; and Wukong, the Chinese trickster god.
The battleground is set in an arena of swords nestled within a snowy mountain range, while the grid itself sports a simple gray background. We particularly appreciate the 3D symbols that land on the reels and the engaging soundtrack, both of which help bring an air of heroism to the scene.
Symbols
Players will encounter a total of nine symbols on the paytable. The low-paying icons are represented by playing card values 10, J, Q, K, and A, while the more rewarding symbols are the divine gods themselves – Wukong, Anubis, Athena, and Thor.
You will also encounter a few bonus icons on the reels, which help unlock special features and yield bigger cash prizes. The Wild symbol is the sword and can substitute for all other icons on the board except for the Scatter. The Scatter is depicted as a pair of Greek-style pillars topped with gold and bearing the four symbols of each god featured in the slot.
Winning Combinations and Jackpots
You can form a winning combination with between 3 and 5 matching symbols. A win is paid out when it lands on one of the 20 active paylines, and all wins pay from the leftmost reel to the right.
Both the 10 and the J award a payout of 1x the stake for five of a kind on a payline. Landing five Qs returns 1.5x the stake, while the K offers 2x the bet. The A yields a payout of 2.5x the stake for five matching symbols.
Now for the more rewarding symbols—the gods. Wukong and Anubis each pay 8x the stake for five of a kind on a payline. Should Athena appear in a combination of 5, you will receive 12x the initial wager. Finally, Thor is the most generous of them all; landing him five times simultaneously rewards 16x the bet.
Players will notice a multiplier at the top of the grid. It can activate at random, applying a value of between 2x and 10x on any spin, including Power Spins.
The Wild symbol can substitute for any other icon, except the Scatter, to help form and enhance winning combinations. This allows for bigger and better overall payouts. In addition, five Wilds on a payline constitute their own winning combination, worth 20x the stake.
Scatter symbols are the key to unlocking free spins and triggering the battle between the gods. If a player lands three Scatters anywhere on the screen, they will be granted 3 lives with which to battle for free spins. Before the battle begins, they may choose which of the four gods they wish to fight alongside. Each god offers different perks.
Wukong can turn between 1 and 2 reels entirely Wild at random, while Athena can synchronize the outcomes of any 3 reels. Anubis can turn between 1 and 2 random symbols on the reels Wild. Thor transforms all other gods that appear on the grid into his own likeness.
Each free spin sets the reels in motion, and the corresponding bonus from the chosen god is applied. After players collect their rewards, a selection of the remaining three gods will appear, along with a green arrow. If the arrow is selected, you receive a free re-spin; otherwise, your god will battle a randomly chosen opponent.
If a battle begins, players will see a mini game board with a 3×3 grid. Only two types of symbols appear—each representing one of the dueling gods. Whichever icon occupies the majority of cells wins the round. This means you will not lose a life and can proceed to your next free spin. Your god has a total of 3 lives and can continue fighting in free spins until they are all lost.
