The origin of Poker is very unclear and highly debated. Some trace the roots of the game to old Chinese and Persian games. The most commonly believed ancestor of the game is the French “poque”, played by the colonies in 19th century New Orleans. The first records of Poker are from 1829 by Joseph Crowell. He described the first version of the game, played by ten players and including cards from 10 to Ace from all suits. The game continued developing and its popularity growing. In time the whole deck of cards was included and the many variations of Poker started deriving.

The basic rules of the contemporary variations of the game are always the same- the players play against each other by after a series of betting and dealing of cards compare a hand consisted of five cards. The player holding the strongest hand wins the round. The ranking of the cards is according to their face value. The ranking of the hands is according to the combination of cards from which they are consisted of.

Some of the most popular from the many variations of are Hold’em and Stud Poker. Texas and Omaha Hold’em are characterized by the fact that players make their final hand from the cards each one received in combination with several “community” cards, which are dealt in the centre of the table for every player to use. Stud Poker’s distinctive feature is that each played received a predetermined number of cards face up and face down. Each different game of Poker is consisted of several betting rounds, during which more cards are dealt. The money collected from each bet is called the “pot” and is for the player who finishes the round with the best of all hands.
