Poker games are fun. On one hand, some players take risks, outlay huge money, and win a Jackpot. On the other hand, most lose terribly, go bankrupt, and get depressed. It is true that poker is a game of luck. But, if one remains steadfastly focused on the game and draws out a good strategy, he can win. And, with a pragmatic money management, poker can be fun and entertaining even though one loses. Let's check out how far these statements are true.

As a player, one needs to be extremely on guard while playing a poker game. Whether playing an online poker or at a poker club, it is important to be a good observer. Note the poker tells of your opponents precisely. Is he a tight-passive player or a loose-aggressive opponent? Or, is he just a meek "calling station"?

A tight-aggressive player would select only strong hands and would bet only when they know they would win. They are also hesitant to bluff. Consequently, you would find them predictable. Tight-weak players also play cautiously. But, they try to call when they should have raised. They bet small amount of money only. As they are so timid in their outlook, these players suffer bad beat.

Some players raise no matter what cards they have. When you realize are you are amid these players, bluff. However, just as you are waiting to catch a poker tell of your opponent, note that you are also being watched by prowling eyes of others.

In other words, don't give out any clues or poker tells. If you are a new player, it is easy to survive as an underdog if you wait and watch others. An experienced player who knows the nuance of the game, would be aggressive and calculated risk taker. He would bluff when he knows he would win the game. However, he would bluff even at other times too! All this, just to distract his opponents and not show up any genuine poker tell.

Be a selective aggressor too in order to get the best out of any game. Try to catch your opponent unawares and lead him to a trap if you find your opponent a loose-aggressive player or a timid-passive player. If you are playing within the rules of the game, why not be a little aggressive in your strategy?

It is important to stay on within your limits and not go stray even though you might find a lucrative prize options. And, for those who still don't believe this, note that you would lose more than win in any poker game session. Realizing this fact would allow you to be more logical and pragmatic in how you play the game.

If you are a new player, start playing a freeroll tourney where you can play without outlaying any buy-ins. Play any way you want and learn. Try out strategies and be an aggressive player to get the experience.

If you are player with little experience and want to get a taste of winning or losing a game, go for a limit-based game at first. A limit game would allow you to bet on a limited amount of money. When playing this type of game, you would not be a millionaire at the first instance. You would also not be bankrupt as well on the first session itself!

Online games often allow you to try your luck and skills on multiple games simultaneously. It's true but know the limitations at well! If you don't master playing one game at a time, you would be washed out if you play many hands simultaneously. Start playing one game at first. When you are comfortable, take up another game and proceed further.

But, how much money would you outlay? This is tricky and depends on how you manage your bankroll. The money you play for the game should not be the cash you are kept aside for your living. You need to keep an account where the money is only for poker games. Then, ask yourself: would you feel jittery if you lose the money you have bet as a buy-in or initial startup cash? If yes, reduce the money you've taken out to play the game.

Remember, you can only play a good, winning game if you are pragmatically aggressive and risk taker. If you are nervous about the money loss, you would not be that aggressive. While playing, you need to be logical and unemotional. Any distractions such as money, loss, or power can ruin your concentration.

If you are totally convinced that you are an experienced player and can endure the distractions of poker, go for a high-staked game. But, you should not outlay all your bankroll cash in one session.

Money management needs to be done with care. Poker is generally a game of entertainment and socializing. It is difficult to play only for your living - though some do play for earning their bread and butter. For making it a serious profession, you need to do a good homework.

Keep a notebook on tips and situations you have gathered during your tenure as a player. Why do you think a player won a hand even though he did not have an excellent cards with him? Was it because he was positioned later in the game and you were placed at an early position? Were you forced to fold even though you had invested money because a player at a later position re-raised a bet?

Perhaps so. Positions do matter in poker games. Consider this factor very well before playing a hand and choosing tactics for playing the game. If you are sitting at a late position, you can bluff well. You would not be able to do so if you are at an early position. You can semi-bluff if you are at a middle position, when you hope to win a game with not-so-good cards.

Generally, it is easy to play with loose-passive opponents on the right side and tight-aggressive players on the left. As the loose players would call most hands, it would offer you opportunities to take a good look at the pot odds while tight players on the left would help you to take away the blinds from them through comprehensive bluffing techniques.

But, positions do not have any to do with games that are either tight or loose. Here, note the other strategies, poker tells, and odds in the games rather than the position you are placed.

Although a lot is being said on poker, it is still a chance that you might be losing all the way. Perhaps, it is simply not your day. Take a break and leave the arena for a while. Emotions, reactions, and sadness can give away your most precious poker tells. You would not be able to control your emotions too. Often, players like this, go on "tilt" and lose your self-composure while playing the game.

Before you go on "tilt" just leave the game. Short-term luck does not really help you be a winner. A game of poker is a long-term game that needs to be practiced diligently and regularly. Think why you should play in a particular way and not the other way.

Should you slow-play or play with an even pace? If you play more number of hands, would you win? Or, would you win if you played selectively? These questions cannot be answered with feelings and emotions. As poker is based more on mathematics, it should be played logically. Ask yourself: what's the expected value?

When the expected value or profit is positive, you would win in the long run. There can be short-term fluctuations where you might not win, but you would surely win in the end. So, try to make bets that have positve expected value and you would be a sure winner all the way.

Learn from your mistakes and the mistakes others make while playing a game. Are you playing too many hands pre-flop? Ensure that this is not the case. It is important to play only 20-25 percent of the hands and fold the rest of the hands before a flop. Many newbies player would enthusiastically go to the river and draw a game with not-so-good hand. Note how far you should go with a particular hand. Is it worth playing?

The buzzword by any expert would be "practice". It is only through experience, learning, and practice that one can learn the game. A sit-n-go policy would not really help a newcomer earn fast bucks.

There are various policies one must follow when pursuing a tourney or a sit-n-go game. In a tourney, managing chips is very important as you would not get chips if you lose all of them. In a sit-n-go game, aggressive policy is far more pragmatic. You need to start from the very initial stage of the session. However, tourneys allow you to wait and watch the game and the players before taking up a strategy.

So, don't get too much bothered about the win. Money does not really matter if you have managed your bankroll well. You need to focus on strategies and tactics to win over the opponents.

If you don't have enough money and would also not like to go for a freeroll game, you can go for other options as well. You can either get staked or play on a loan. However, taking a loan is not that easy when you need to pay it back with a good amount of interest. What you can do is play a staked game. But be sure that the person on whose behalf you are playing the game would like to get profits as well!

All in all, poker can bring trouble as much as joy and entertainment. It all depends on how you manage your skills and money when playing the game. If you can manage well, luck would not come in your way to stop you from being a winner. It would in fact, help you to cash on the opportunities whenever required.
