Gambling slowing down in Las Vegas according to survey

A 2010 survey conducted by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority says that Las Vegas is heading towards economic improvement; however this is not because of an increase in the visitor’s spending on gambling. This was a major revelation to have come out of the study as most of the 3,600 visitors that were surveyed confirmed that they did not look to gamble away as large amounts of money that they used to in the past years.

The survey showed that the portion of the visitors in the city who gambled in a casino was just 80%, however high it might sound, was still a 7% drop since four years ago. Another thing which has come down is the amount of money the visitors want to spend while in the city as the average spending per person in 2006 was $651.94 which has dropped to $446.20 in 2010.

However, the financial condition of the city is still improving from when it was struck by recession as the non-gambling related spending in the city has gone up very fast in the recent months, fuelling a slow recovery for the city. The figures for non-gambling spending have risen from an average of $466.20 in 2009 to $590 in 2010. Many other facts about visitors in Las Vegas were revealed by the study. The average age of the visitors has been said to be 49, contrary to the popular belief that the city is most visited by rowdy youngsters. Another category of people which has declined is those who used to plan spending large amounts of money in casinos. Only 19% of the surveyed people made up this group.

The foreign market has been revealed to be one of the growth areas for Las Vegas. Around 18% of the visitors in the city had come from foreign countries which was an increase of 5% since 2006. However, most visitors also expressed their uncertainty over whether they will visit the city again, while according to most analysts, this just points towards the unstable economic conditions in the country.
