Argentina to Vote an Online Gambling Ban Bill
Argentina is about to pass Councilor Luis Alberto Mauri's bill for banning tax free online gambling in the country.
Argentinean government is preparing a new law that will prohibit all forms of web gambling. If passed, this highly unpopular measure would be absolutely effective in eliminating all online gambling. The bill suggests that all current tax free and unregistered online gambling activities are brought to their end. Councilor Luis Alberto Mauri requires all gambling Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block their sites from being accessed by Argentinean users. Providing the fact that Argentineans are big fans of web gambling, this is going to be a tough job.
Politicians hurry to inform that they are for setting a control over the gambling activities. Regulations and taxes are to be imposed on casino games, sports betting, poker and bingo. They think this is the only way for government to get its due from the web gambling industry. It should be taken into consideration that if the aim is at higher profits, then regulation and not banning is to be sought for.
There are actually two separate bills. The first one declares all forms of online gambling out of the law. Paradoxically, there is still no clear definition of ‘online gambling'.
The second bill gives the ISPs the right to block online gambling sites as well as listing the abovementioned gambling activities as illegal. If the bill is passed, penalties for breaking this law will vary from fines to prison. Punitive measures will go for web casinos and gaming sites and not for users. In the meantime people are calling for regulation of the industry, and not its closure.
