Bright Future Awaits the Casino Industry in Goa, India amid Tourism Surge

The Indian state of Goa develops its gambling field and elevates it to the next level which is visible by the resounding approval of the community which enjoys its offerings. Due to the high rates of interest expressed by the middle-class tourism sector the casino field has witnessed a significant surge in the past months and the forecasts for its future appear bright.

Ever since its legalization in some restricted zones to the liking of Goa, Daman, and Sikkim, gambling in India has seen quite the development as the authorities put ongoing efforts to provide the public with competitive offerings . There have been concerns expressed in the past that the gambling field is going to introduce problem gambling to the field and gaming addition is not to be underestimated by the authorities and the community.

However, over the span of operation, the authorities have attempted to reassure the public that the field has the proper regulation provided and all parties involved are going to have the proper protection guaranteed. According to the Public Gambling Act issued in 1976, this kind of operation could be provided only by five-stars hotels and offshore vessels. At the moment the operation of both legal and illegal gambling facilities managed to generate more than US$60 billion over the span of a single year.

This amount is further boosted by the aforementioned tourism sector, as it has been recently reported. Future operation of casino facilities in the region is sure to take place, since the revenue reports provide the needed information in support. In a recently issued study conducted by Dr. Afonso Botelho, Associate Professor of Sociology at the Rosary College of Commerce and Arts in South Goa, the field has already been firmly established in the region.

Recommendations in Relation to the Casino Field

Goa has managed to become associated with gambling offerings and the casino venues it is able to provide attract more and more people to the region. Even though it has indeed had a controversial impact once it launched operation and gained speed, casino venues are sure to remain part of the entertainment landscape of the Indian state. It could be recalled that last summer the Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar issued an official report which made clear his position that there is no relation between the crime rate in the region and casino operation.

In addition to that, he even pointed out that the region had witnessed a plunge in its crimes rate over the span of the previous three years which only comes to further solidify his point. The local economy witnessed a positive boost since many tourists were drawn by the gaming offerings, whereas locals now have the chance to be employed by the casino developers and leave unemployment behind them. Back in 1992 when gambling was resurrected after the amendment of the existing law, many people found their new work place.

According to Dr. Botelho, what needs to be done in order to further improve the performance of the field and make it more secure is the introduction of a specially designated commission which to oversee the field. Every state in the US where gaming is proliferating has such authority which makes sure that all businesses in the field operate in the way they are supposed to. At the moment the field does not have a specific set of rules which to guide the casino operators which could often lead to situations of conflict, such as the recent tax evasion case.

There is also the advice given that local residents should be prohibited from entering casino facilities in Goa which could curb problem gambling tendencies. As an added factor, entry fees in gambling venues should also be introduced so that foreign tourists who choose to give their luck a try are able to add more to the overall revenue of the casino developers. These recommendations have the potential to shape the field and transform it into a more reliable one in the upcoming years.
