The latter is the case with Spanish Black or Spanish 21 as it is also called. In this game, all of the 10 cards are removed from a deck. This actually is not advantageous to the player because it is proven that decks rich with ten cards always favor the player and not the house.

Now, if you are wondering why in the world anyone would want to play a game when they are at a significant disadvantage, here is the answer: In order to compensate for the missing tens, Spanish Blackjack consists of much more liberal rules and another method of winning.

The details to the variations are as follows:

  • Players are allowed to double down on any number of cards and are given a surrender option that will cost just one wager.
  • Late surrender is allowed on the first two cards or by forfeiting half of the standing bet if the dealer does not have blackjack.
  • Players can also double down after a split - meaning that a player can choose to place a second or double wager, alongside his first and then separate his two original cards into two new hands, which can then have the double down applied.
  • Splits can be done up to three times and can include those hands containing Aces.
  • A player is allowed to take a hit and double down to split Aces.

Most definitely the greatest advantage enjoyed by Spanish Blackjack is the fact that a player's 21 always wins. In other words, a player blackjack always beats a dealer blackjack.

These payouts are as follows:

  • A five card 21 pays out at 3:2
  • A six card 21 pays out at 2:1
  • A seven card 21 pays out at 3:1
  • A 6,7,8 or 7,7,7 pays 3:2
  • If these cards are all the same suit, they pay out at 2:1
  • If these cards are all spades, they pay out at 3:1
  • If a player gets a suited 7,7,7 when the dealers face up card is a 7, that players wins $1000 for bets ranging from $5 to $24 and $5000 for any bets over $25. The other players at the table also receive a $50 'envy bonus'.
  • If the player doubles, all of the bonuses are not paid.

These rules allow players to play this variation of Blackjack with a great deal of strategy, making it a challenging and fast paced game. Spanish Blackjack is becoming increasingly popular and is being offered at many casinos worldwide.
