Hard Hands in Blackjack
Many people will tell you that when playing Blackjack, you should have a solid strategy in mind in order to stand a decent chance of winning against the house. However, you certainly cannot walk into a casino carrying a printed chart with you so it is therefore a good idea to learn a good, basic strategy and memorize it.

As you know, a hard hand is any hand that does not contain an Ace. We will begin with two of the easiest strategies for playing hard hands. First off, if you receive a total of 8 or less, constantly hit or draw. Secondly, if you get a total of 17 or more, stand. It is quite easy to remember these two strategies so commit them to memory.
Now, for hands totaling 9 through 16, it is necessary to take into consideration what the dealer has for his up card.
On hard hands which total 9 through 11, you have two choices when it comes to a basic strategy. These choices are either to either hit or double down. In the case that you receive a 9 and the dealer's up card is anything ranging from a 3 to a 6, you should double down. If the dealer's up card is anything else, you should hit. If you happen to get a 10, then double down - except in the case that he is showing a 10 or an Ace in which case you should hit. If you get an 11, double down unless the dealer has an Ace wherein you should hit.
For hard hands totaling 12 to 16, there are also two, basic strategies to take: either hit or stand. If you get a 12, stand if the dealer is showing any card from a 4 to 6. If he shows any other card, you should hit. The same holds true for hard hands totaling 13 to 16 - the best strategy is to stand if the dealer has 6 or lower and the best move to make if he is showing a 7 or higher is to hit.
Learning how to handle hard hands in Blackjack is not all that difficult. By taking the time to fully understand the above and commit it to your memory, your game should improve and your bankroll should last you a good deal longer.
