Blackjack Terms

If you are a relatively new player to the game of Blackjack, you may be a bit concerned as you listen to the terminology used around a Blackjack table. In order to learn the game correctly, you of course must learn the basic rules as well as the terms used in the game. Read through this list of blackjack terminology so that you become familiar with the words and what they mean.

Anchorman

The anchorman is the player sitting in the last seat of the table, on the far right of the dealer. The anchorman is the last one to act.

Barring a Player

This is a term used to describe a player who is not allowed to play in a game of Blackjack.

Blackjack

A winning hand in the game of Blackjack that is comprised of an Ace and a card valued at 10.

Bust

When you hand totals more than 21, it is called a bust and you lose.

Card Counter

A card counter is a skilled, educated player who keeps track of the value of the cards being dealt.

Dealer

The dealer works for casino and he is responsible for dealing the cards to the players.

Deck

A set of fifty-two playing cards make up a deck.

Double Down

When you are given the option to double your bet with one card coming.

Early Surrender

This is an option wherein you can surrender half of your bet while the dealer looks to see if he has blackjack.

First Baseman

The first baseman is the player sitting in the first seat of the table to the far left of the dealer. The first basement is the first to take action.

Flat Bet

A flat bet is when you bet the same amount each hand without varying.

Floorman

This is the person who works for the casino whose job it is to supervise the dealers.

Hard Total

A hard total is a hand that contains no Ace or when the Ace counts as 1.

High Roller

A high roller is a person who tends to bet very large sums of money.

Hit

Drawing an extra card, on top of the original hand.

Hole Card

The hole card is the dealer's card that is face down and unseen.

Insurance

Insurance is an option that offers you the chance to make another bet when the dealer's up card is an Ace.

Mucker

A mucker is a cheater who adds cards to a game consisting of multiple decks of cards.

Multiple Deck

A card game made up of more than one deck of cards.

Paint

A Jack, Queen or a King card. Named because these cards feature pictures on them.

Push

A push is a draw or a tie between a player and the dealer wherein no one wins or loses.

Round

A round is a complete series of play in which all players have played their hands.

Shoe

A shoe is a box on the table which holds decks of cards.

Snapper

Another word (slang) for the game of Blackjack.

Soft Total

A hand which consists of an Ace that is valued at 11.

Splitting Pairs

This is an option offered allowing a player to split up a hand consisting of two identically ranked cards, making two separate hands.

Stand

A term used to describe the instance when a player decides not to take any more cards.

Stiff Hand

A hand which totals between 12 and 16 which will bust on a 10 valued card hit.

Surrender

This is an option which allows a player to forfeit ½ of his bet after the dealer checks to see if he has Blackjack.

Ten-Poor Deck

A deck of cards in which more cards valued at 10 have been dealt.

Ten-Rich Deck

A deck of cards in which less cards valued at 10 have been dealt.

Third Baseman

The third baseman is the player seated in the last seat at the table to the far right of the dealer. The third baseman acts last.

Twenty-One

Another name for the game of Blackjack.

Up Card

This is the dealer's card that can be seen by all players. It faces up.
