When gambling, a betting system is a method of betting that can to some degree or another, increase your odds of winning - in the short term that is. It should be noted right from the start of this discussion that no betting system works over the long course simply due to the fact that no system can totally beat the house edge or the mathematical advantage any given casino has.

Two of the simplest and oldest types of betting systems are the negative progression system and the positive progression system.

A positive progression system is one in which you bet more when you are winning. By increasing your bets during a win streak, you can capitalize on that streak and win more than you would if you were betting low. Of course, this does not win over the edge the house has, but if Lady Luck is on your side, you can end up winning a bit of money so that you don't leave the casino empty-handed.

An example of a positive progression system is this: Each time you win a hand, add 50% to your bet. Say you start by betting $10. If you win that hand, then you add half of that which is $5 so you will be betting $15. If you win the $15 hand, you add another half so you will be betting $22. Each time you lose, go back to your original $10 bet. With this simple method, your bets increase only when you are winning. If you are losing, you will only use one unit each time. But while on a winning streak, you will have the extra cash to increase your bets with.

Now, on to the opposite end of the spectrum - the negative progressive system. This types of system is based on the probability of losing an infinite number of times. Using this type of system, you start out by betting a set amount. As an example we will say you begin by betting $1.00. If you lose the first hand, your next bet will be $2.00, double the amount of your first. If you happen to lose this second hand, you double your bet to $4.00. You continue to double each bet you lose until you finally win a hand. Once you win a hand, you then return to the original bet amount of $1.00. With this type of system you are guaranteed to make a profit of one betting unit, or $1.00 in our example when you finally do win a hand. You will make a small profit each time it is used unless of course that you lose an infinite number of times.

There are many variations of betting systems that take features of both the positive and negative progressions, all devised to create the ''perfect" betting system that wins the most often with the least chance of busting. However, there is no system in existence that can overcome the house advantage in the long run. This does not mean that these systems are not worth trying, because they are. You can certainly find the chances for making a profit in tournament play using a system and especially when playing online as a way to take advantage of the bonuses internet casinos offer.
